So Padma's asked me if we have plans to attend the Ball together. Before I answer her, I wanted to talk with you, and what I wanted to say was

I think we should go with other people.

I'm sorry we didn't talk this over yesterday, but then you didn't come to Hogsmeade after all. And when I got back Teds was around and the others.

I didn't realise you were worrying about it, though, or I'd have made sure we had a chance to discuss it.

I mean to say, we've said it often enough: we're not at a stage of life to be thinking exclusively about one another. I actually assumed you knew it would be perfectly all right to think about going with one of the visiting wizards, after all, we've discussed what sort of opportunity this represents to gain experience of other people and other social networks.

Has anyone asked? Or do you think someone's thinking of it?

Ah. Well, perhaps I should go ahead and ask someone myself, to clarify things. I enjoyed the bit of conversation we had with Margaux and Claudine after the task. I thought Margaux seemed especially well-spoken.

I shouldn't think romance should be a primary aim in this sort of thing, but if it were to blossom, that wouldn't be an unpleasant thing. Certainly, you shouldn't rule it out or attempt to keep it from happening.

Think what Whirl might write for you! Especially if you ask the boy, n'est-ce pas? (Teasing.)

Did you want me to write The Prophet for you about the engagement announcement, by the way? That was an excellent suggestion Patil had. I could write and imply that I wanted that issue from the archives to make a present of it to someone. If you wanted to keep your name out of it, that is.

Mm. No, you're right: it goes without saying that no one dances as well as you.

But not going together doesn't mean you can't save me a dance, of course. Say you will? And not a waltz, either: this is the sort of event where the floor will be cluttered with all the hopeless cases whenever there's a waltz.

Millie, honestly. That's so typical. Maybe we should see about finding some one of the Durmstrang lot to ask her. That would be a laugh!

And, of course, I'll take care of The Prophet for you. Glad to do it.

Well. There's that, then. Margaux said a very pretty 'Ooooh, mais oui!' And then she asked if I would wear a tie or scarf the colour of her robes if she'd give me one.

You weren't thinking of asking Krum, were you? Well, just in case: I heard him after breakfast, telling one of his mates that he's asked someone already, just to have it done so he can turn down any nonsense invitations from that herd that chases after him.

It's funny how many of those Durmstrang chaps assume none of us can understand them at all; they don't even try to speak quietly.

I suppose he'll have asked one of the older Durmstrang girls. In fact, I rather wonder if he isn't promised to someone back home. He seems so very reserved and disinclined to really mingle with any of us. Although, some of that impression is a result of how severe he looks. I expect he'll look very distinguished, in an Eastern European way, when he's seventy or eighty years old, but you're quite right that his looks are a bit unfortunate now.
