A Day of Remembrance

Please join the Head Boy and me at the lake shore this Saturday at sundown, following the Hogsmeade outing. Having attained the Headmaster's permission, we will be holding a student-only Day of Remembrance ceremony, to honour and preserve the memory of those who are no longer with us. December 13th is also St. Lucia's Day, the festival of light, and we will be floating lanterns across the lake's surface in a gesture of hope intended to see us through the long and dark winter.

I plan on waiting until the very last minute to tell Padma and Seamus that as council members, their attendance will not be required (I'll tell them that Hydra's isn't, either, though we of course know that's not true). I was thinking just after the Prefect's meeting before everyone leaves for Hogsmeade.

I was thinking it may be a good idea to have you and Justin there when I tell them, just to be on the safe side.

Oh - no, nothing like that. Neither respond well to intimidation! Be casual. I plan to tell them that the Day of Remembrance is a tonne of trifling work that would be a waste of their valuable time, and make it seem I'm doing a favour to them. Oh, and I'll say that I've got you and Justin minding some of the lesser details - they should like that, especially if you seem a little unenthusiastic about it.

As our esteemed Head Girl has said, this will indeed be an event of honouring memories and expressing hope. No matter how much revising one has yet to do, it will certainly be salubrious to take a bit of time for the -- dare I say it? -- poetic and contemplative ceremony planned.

Lest any of you be disappointed, there will not be any actual poetry involved. I refer merely to the sight of floating lanterns on the lake, the flames borne up in so many individual floating lanterns, separately making their way and yet united by one light, as it were.

(Well, and it ought to be rather pretty, poetry and metaphor aside. In any case, do come, all!)

You've no idea how carefully I had to ask Dolohov for this. I told him that it was important to remember the traitors, because so many of them were once just like us, and we needed to think back on them to understand why they made the decisions they did.

Oh, and Padma, Seamus, and Hydra are not welcome. I told Hydra already and she understands, but I'm waiting 'til the last moment to spring it on Padma and Seamus. Keep it under your cloak for me?
