Good news!

I've been named as Head Girl for the next school year. The titles have not, as we feared, gone to Seamus and Padma. Linus Moon is Head Boy, and he ought to be easy enough to work with. He's very much all bluster and Byron, but is decidedly not someone who will go around Cruciating firsties. The worst I anticipate from him is getting in the way. Oh, and the fact that Padma has a history of manipulating him for her own agenda is something else to watch out for, to say nothing of his boot-licking worship of Headmaster Dolohov. If I can stay on good terms with Padma, then hopefully Moon's friendship with her won't be a problem.

One thing I am uncertain about is what role Head Boy and Girl will fill now that three (student) council members will be at school? Surely they must outrank the Head Boy and Head Girl, but to what extent are they expected to enforce school rules and policy? Hydra, do you know? If not, I suppose this is probably a good question to bring to the Headmaster.

What tremendous news from yesterday's session in court! Even during summer hols, I'm sure that the Hogwarts' student body is overcome with excitement to learn that our Lord has chosen to bestow his highest honour to three of our fellows. Padma, Seamus, and Hydra, you have my deepest admiration and congratulations for having been initiated into the Lord's council. I know that the challenges you faced were difficult beyond measure, but you have proven yourselves worthy in all respects.

We have suffered loses of late, loses that have, for some of us, left behind a great deal of pain. Time marches forward with little regard for our pain, but in that pain it is comforting to be reminded that our Lord's grace can heal the greatest of ills.

Truly, it is heartening to know that the Lord Protector's grace falls so unwaveringly upon those of us in the younger generations. The future of the Protectorate lies in our hands, and all are counting on us to do what's good and right.

Now, for those of you who knew her, I'm happy to report that Samantha Montgomery has been released from St. Mungos and will be convalescing at her family's home in Cheshire. Her family is waiting to see how she adjusts to being at home before they will allow for visitors. Meanwhile, I'm sure that she would love to receive your cards and letters.

I hope the summer is treating you all very well.

So did you bin her gift into the fire or do the decent thing and open it? Or at least put it aside until you're feeling less raw about the whole thing.

But you didn't really think you'd end up with Padma in the long haul, did you? Her parents would never allow it, and whatever excitement you got out of quarreling together would have eventually gone sour.

And I hope you're still not holding Draco responsible. You know as well as I do how mortified he was by that entire display.

Anyway, as far as birthdays go, I'm sure you've had better. But you are of age now, so at least there's that.

So Padma's asked me if we have plans to attend the Ball together. Before I answer her, I wanted to talk with you, and what I wanted to say was

I think we should go with other people.
alt_daphne: (ohno)
Padma, did you have a nice time in Hogsmeade with Davies? You probably weren't in any state to notice, but I didn't go to the village today. I was just so caught up in looking through back issues Cut Above and Posh that I utterly forgot to leave on time, and by the time I noticed, it wasn't worth it to walk all the way out.

There are loads of articles about Professor Razzer. A lot are about his quidditching days, and the things he got up to with his teammates and female fans, and the dates that he brought to important social events. None of it seemed like it might have been about my Mother. Well, none of it except for this:

This Quidditch Star might be benched, but it hasn't kept him from stepping out with an old flame this Valentine's Day! But does her fiancé know that she's been blowing on her old lover's coals? Or that she'll soon be starting to show? This Lady Romeo had better decide who the Father is, or she'll be left in the cold with no ring at all.

It's dated from February 14, 1979.

You don't suppose...

Well, it might be about anyone, but you know how coded these "obscure items" can be. And Lady Romeo?

Mother's maiden name is Montague.

I'm up early enough to have written Mother, Father, and Queenie an owl, and do some reading, too. I'd like to get to breakfast before there's nothing but porridge left - yech! I expect I'll be exhausted by this afternoon, since we were up late last night with Professor Sinistra, but it really can't be helped.

News about what happens with the boggarts much have reached the Gryffindors, only I thought they were supposed to be brave and bold? Ron Weasley fainted while star-gazing last night, and for no good reason that I can see! Well, a shooting star did streak across the eastern sky at that particular moment, but that's no excuse to clutch your chest, gasp "Oh my heavens!" and crumble to the ground in a heap. To be perfectly honest it was quite amusing. Especially when Blaise yelled out "Do hurry, Professor Sinistra! Weasley's got the vapours!" I think he really might have had them, too! Upon rousing, I half-expected him to bat his eyelashes and call for smelling salts. Or maybe one of those lacy fans, charmed with a rivitialising spell.

Anyway, it only goes to show that karma, that thing Padma and Parvati talk about sometimes, probably really exists. For some people, at least!

It’s good to be back at Hogwarts.

Padma’s right, Diagon Alley is wiz-nift! Mother took me to Malkin’s since I’ve grown, and to get a new satchel. We stopped in at Ollivander’s to show off my wand, and he said he liked it very much. No new cauldron, though, so I’ll have to make do with this.

Papa also sent me off with sweets. If anyone would like some, I left a bowl in the common room. You’re welcome!

I made sure to tell Malfoy and Marvolo they could have some if they wanted any, after the wonky night they had. Malfoy almost went spare when he found out Marvolo wasn’t on the train. There was a problem getting past the platform, and Weasley said he thought it was hexed. So Weasley nicked his father’s charmed car and flew it to Hogwarts. They crashed into the Whomping Willow, missing sorting and everything. (Congratulations again to Hydra!) I’m not sure they even had supper.

I’m just glad everyone’s all right. Weasley’s helping take care of the poor willow.

Schedules are out, and Slytherin is nearly done with its Loyalty Oaths. Marvolo and I were talking about it when he signed. It must be queer to sign something swearing to your father, but he is the Lord Protector. He was kind of shirty with me, but I might be too after the day he had. It's already forgiven.

Now, it's time to feed Omen. She looks hungry . . .
